History
The Citadelle Laferrière near Cap-Haïtien was constructed between 1805 and 1820, taking roughly 15 years to finish. It was commissioned by Henri Christophe following the Haitian Revolution. It is one of the largest fortresses in the Western Hemisphere.
The Citadelle is Haiti's most-visited heritage site, yet the surrounding communities capture little of its economic value. This corridor project builds the access road, visitor facilities and vendor infrastructure that turn tourism into local income.
